Residential-Basic Contractor (Contractor work relative to detached one-family and two-family residences and one-family townhouses not over three stories in height).
Residential-Light Commercial Contractor (Contractor work or activity related to multifamily and multiuse light commercial buildings and structures).
General Contractor (Contractor work or activity that is unlimited in scope regarding any residential or commercial projects).

It means that the General Contractor you choose must be licensed under these guidelines in order to pull a permit with your local municipalities.
How does this help protect you the consumer?
In order to qualify to take the exam to become General Contractor you must submit to a criminal background check, provide banking information, work history, and past client references.
Do I need a General Contractor for my type of work?
If the work you are considering work that requires a permit i.e. new construction, an addition, kitchen or bath remodeling or basement finishing or any job totally over $2,500 worth of work.
How can I tell if a contractor is licensed?
